Vitamins and Minerals in Skin Health: Which Ones Actually Matter After 50


The skincare aisle treats vitamins like flavor additions. The research treats them like structural requirements — and one of them has a far more direct connection to skin longevity than most people realize.

A 2024 dermatology review evaluated the evidence behind the vitamins and minerals most commonly cited in skin health: niacinamide, vitamins C, D, and E, zinc, and omega-3 fatty acids among them. The consistent finding was that niacinamide and vitamins C, D, and E each contribute meaningfully to UV protection, while zinc and omega-3s show particular value for inflammatory skin conditions [1].

Niacinamide's deeper role

Niacinamide (vitamin B3) is well studied for improving skin elasticity, reducing redness and discoloration, and strengthening the skin's lipid barrier [2]. It's also one of the better-tolerated actives in dermatology, generally well tolerated across skin types even at higher concentrations, which is part of why it's become a near-universal ingredient rather than one reserved for specific skin concerns. But its most important function for skin longevity specifically is upstream of any of that: vitamin B3 is the metabolic precursor your body uses to synthesize the entire NAD+ family of coenzymes. A deficiency severe enough causes pellagra, a systemic disease — that's how fundamental this pathway is [2].

In other words: niacinamide isn't just "another good ingredient" alongside NAD+. It's the raw material NAD+ is built from.

It's worth being upfront about something the research itself flags: while oral supplements show a beneficial role in skin health broadly — particularly for photoprotection, general anti-aging support, and inflammatory conditions like atopic dermatitis, acne, and psoriasis — reviewers consistently note that further high-quality studies are still needed before stronger claims are warranted [1]. That's not a reason to dismiss the category, but it is a reason to hold "vitamin-infused" marketing claims to the same disclosed-dose standard as everything else in a routine, rather than assuming vitamins are automatically low-stakes and therefore exempt from scrutiny.

Vitamin D's overlooked role goes deeper than "bone health"

Vitamin D tends to get filed under bone health and general wellness, but its mechanistic role in skin specifically is more direct than that reputation suggests. Skin isn't just a site where vitamin D acts — it's the organ that manufactures it in the first place: UVB radiation converts a cholesterol-derived precursor in the epidermis into previtamin D3, which keratinocytes then process locally into its active form [6]. Once active, vitamin D binds its receptor (VDR) throughout skin tissue and triggers a genuinely broad set of protective mechanisms — reducing oxidative stress, supporting DNA repair after UV exposure, reinforcing the skin's barrier proteins, and, notably, influencing the TGF-β/Smad signaling pathway that governs collagen production directly [7].

There's a specific, well-documented mechanism connecting vitamin D deficiency to visible aging: low vitamin D levels have been clinically associated with reduced skin elasticity, consistent with vitamin D's role in supporting collagen synthesis and inhibiting the matrix metalloproteinase enzymes (MMPs) that break collagen down [7]. There's also a genuine catch-22 built into how most people get their vitamin D: sunscreen with an SPF of just 8 reduces the skin's own vitamin D production by more than 95%, meaning the same UV protection that guards against photoaging also blocks the skin's main synthesis route for a vitamin that helps repair some of that same UV damage [6]. That tension is exactly why topical or oral vitamin D supplementation is worth considering as a deliberate addition to a routine, rather than assuming daily sun protection alone will cover it — the two aren't interchangeable, and diligent SPF use can quietly compound a deficiency it isn't designed to address.

Zinc specifically supports skin repair and regeneration processes and helps regulate the inflammatory response, working alongside its role in collagen and elastin production — which connects it to both the barrier and structural sides of skin aging at once, rather than being a single-purpose nutrient. Some research suggests omega-3 fatty acids may extend their protective effect further, potentially helping protect telomeres — the protective caps on chromosomes that shorten with age — though this remains an area of ongoing investigation rather than settled science.

The rest of the vitamin alphabet, briefly

A few other nutrients come up consistently enough in the research to be worth naming directly. Vitamin A and its retinoid derivatives help regulate collagen turnover and are among the most extensively studied anti-aging topicals available, though they need to be buffered carefully for tolerability on mature, thinner skin. None of these individually rival what a disclosed-dose active like NAD+ delivers — but they explain why "eat well, and your skin will show it" isn't just a platitude. It's describing a real, if indirect, supply chain.

Where the evidence gets genuinely mixed

Omega-3 fatty acids are a useful case study in why "anti-inflammatory" isn't automatically the same as "good for every skin process." Research on essential fatty acids confirms that omega-3 supplementation, dietary or topical, does modulate skin's inflammatory response and offers real protection from photodamage [8] — the anti-inflammatory framing most marketing relies on is genuinely supported. The same anti-inflammatory action that helps skin manage chronic, low-grade inflammation can work against it during acute repair, which is exactly the kind of nuance that gets flattened out of most supplement marketing copy.

Vitamin C deserves its own closer look, because it's a good case study in why the same nutrient can perform completely differently from one bottle to the next. Pure L-ascorbic acid — the most biologically active form — has the strongest direct evidence behind it for stimulating collagen and fighting free radicals, but it's also notoriously unstable and penetrates skin poorly on its own [3]. It oxidizes readily once exposed to light, heat, or air, and that degradation process is directly influenced by the formulation's pH, temperature, and dissolved oxygen content — meaning two products with identical ascorbic acid concentrations on the label can arrive at your door with very different amounts of active ingredient actually left inside [4].

The rest can genuinely help as part of a broader nutritional pattern, without needing to be oversold as the main event.

None of this is an argument against a well-rounded diet — quite the opposite. It's an argument for being specific about what each nutrient is actually doing, rather than treating "vitamins" as one undifferentiated category of vaguely good things. Some are foundational to a specific, disclosed pathway. Others are genuinely supportive but secondary. Knowing which is which changes how much weight a given claim on a label actually deserves.
