Lifting creams have a bad reputation — not because they're completely useless, but because people expect the impossible from them.
The face is a layered structure, and age-related changes don't happen only at the surface. So no cream replaces procedures that work at the level of the dermis and beyond. Skin doesn't age in isolation. The face is a multi-layered structure: bone, periosteum, deep fascia, deep fat, muscle, superficial fat, superficial fascia. These structures are connected by ligaments containing collagen, which hold tissue in place — and age along with everything else.
As we age, the quality of skin's collagen foundation shifts: the balance between collagen production and breakdown gets disrupted. Old, damaged collagen — including collagen affected by UV exposure and glycation — accumulates, while new collagen synthesis slows. Tissue loses elasticity and firmness. This happens not just in skin, but in the deeper structures underneath it.
How a Lifting Cream Actually Works
A cream mostly acts at the level of the stratum corneum, and at best the epidermis. In rare cases, at certain concentrations, there can be indirect influence on the dermis via the dermo-epidermal junction — peptides or plant extracts can signal or accumulate in that zone and affect what's happening in the dermis below. But mass-market creams generally only reach the upper layers. So claiming a cream can lift the facial oval isn't accurate — it doesn't operate at the level where sagging actually forms.
Where Cosmetics End and Medicine Begins

Actives for Long-Term Skin Quality Improvement
Some ingredients work on something other than instant effect — they improve skin quality over time. Retinol and peptides fall here: they can influence skin density, condition, and dermal-level quality. The effect is cumulative and takes time.
This isn't lifting in the literal sense. Improved density doesn't mean tissue physically moves upward.
Within this category, retinaldehyde (retinal) is worth a closer look. Both retinol and retinal need to convert into retinoic acid — the form skin receptors actually respond to — before they do anything. Retinol takes two conversion steps; retinal takes one, since it's already one step closer to the active form.
