2. The molecule never got past your skin barrier
Your stratum corneum exists to keep things out. That is its entire evolutionary job and it is extremely good at it.
NAD+ is a large, water-loving molecule — close to the worst possible profile for crossing a lipid-rich barrier. Applied alone, most of it simply sits on the surface. It never reaches the living cells that are waiting for fuel.

Why potency without barrier safety is a bad trade after 50
